Richard Hornby – a great, British designer

Richard Hornby was a furniture designer in the 1960’s, his beautifully crafted furniture pieces were manufactured by Fyne Ladye Furniture of Bath and many were sold through Heals and Harrods of London.

Available in our Funky Retro – Home Office collection, this particular desk, or secretaire, is a very simple modernistic design in Afromosia dark teak with a stunning turquoise leather top, and features a hidden space for stationery, plus reed fronted drawers.

The Afromosia tree, sometimes referred to as “African Teak” can grow up to 150 ft tall with a 3-6 ft trunk diameter. It originates from west Africa, mainly Ghana and the Ivory Coast.  It is commonly used in boat building and furniture construction, as it is easy to work with both hand and machine tools. Sadly this wood is now on the IUCN Red List and classed as endangered due to a population reduction of over 50% in the last three generations. This has been caused by a decline in its natural range, and above all, human exploitation.  All the more reason to treasure this particular piece of furniture.
